Manmade or modified watercourses in lowland areas typically rely on a pumped drainage system to move vast volumes of water and prevent flooding. These watercourses require regular maintenance to ensure their continued flow rates in moving water to the pumps.

Maintenance involves cutting the vegetation, either on the embankments or in the channels, but this needs to be done in an environmental and ecologically sensitive manner to promote (work with) nature. Meanwhile, sediment and organic matter washed into the channels has to be dredged to maintain the channels’ profile and flow rates.
